The days of yore, when you are hearkened back to an era of gin joints
and underground music caverns are alive and well in Monte Rio. The Rio
Nido Roadhouse is an eclectic bar, restaurant and swimming hole
located in the redwoods off River Road, a stone's throw from
Guerneville.

We dropped by a few weeks ago after noticing their road side sign
advertising 15 beers on tap. The joint was jumpin' with folks
watching the game at the bar and with dinner guests enjoying the
outdoor feel of their covered vine patio. The staff is very friendly
and welcoming. We were greeted with a smile and a hello at the door
and our drinks were served before we knew it. My kinda' drinking
establishment!

They have a great beer selection, as well as a full bar and lunch and
dinner menu. The food they were bringing out of the kitchen surely looked
tantalized to my taste buds. Prices are downright reasonable for the
portions they were serving and my eye is set on their rib plate special
next time we visit the area.

They offer music on weekends, with a wide variety of bands from world
beat to blues. Check their schedule
here.

We visited in the winter, so we didn't get to use the pool. But, it looks
like a nice place to bring the kids if you are looking for an alternative swimming hole near the Russian River.

If you are looking for a fun and inexpensive lunch or dining spot, or a fun place to listen to music and enjoy a beer, I have to agree with owner Brad Metzger's description of the Roadhouse, "this is the most fun I have had in a double wide trailer!

One of our favorite drives is scenic West Side Road leading into the town of Healdsburg, 45 minutes away from "Artist's View" vacation rental in Jenner. There are many world class wineries to visit along the way and the mellow laid back feel of the area is a wonderful way to relax.

And what better way to finish your day in Russian River wine country, than to settle in to Bergamot Alley Wine bar in Healdsburg and taste a bit of Europe in our own backyard. Proprietors Kevin Wardell and Sarah Johnson are on a mission to expand the palate of California wine and beer drinkers through unique and exciting selection of old world European wine varietals and quality hand crafted brews. They have succeeded not only in their carefully selected menu, but also in creating an environment that is seductive to the senses.

Imagine transporting an uber-hip East Village loft smack in the middle of Healdsburg square with your own private DJ spinning vinyl records on a vintage turntable and stereo gear and that’s what Bergamot has created for their local following. The first thing I noticed when I dropped by for a beer with my wife was the modern mix of metal and wood in their furniture décor. The tables and modified “elementary school” chairs were beautifully crafted for both intimate and large groups of people. You felt at home when you walked in, the high ceilings inviting you to stick around and the brick walls and wood beams throwing off the vibe of a modern/medieval wine cave experience.

The rare wine room locker in the back of the tasting room captured my attention right away. I found out that it was a vintage barn door equipped with it’s own pulley system to open and close it, adding to the highly creative impulses of Bergamot’s owners. The walls are covered with modern artwork, thanks to owner/artist Sarah Johnson and Nathan Covey Singleton Frerichs who hails from Telluride, Colordado.

The crowd was in a festive mood lit up by the sounds of a modern African funk record spinning on the turntable. We introduced ourselves to owner, Kevin Wardell and he was very friendly and accommodating, offering advise to his patrons and making sure everyone’s glass was full. The crowd there is mostly locals and it had a laid back vibe that you get with people familiar with each other in a small town like Healdsburg.
We studied the wine menu and saw many of our favorite varietals from Spain, France and Italy on the list. The unique blends added to our curiosity and we made a promise to go back for a tasting and to pick up a bottle, or two to share with friends.

I give the Berg 5 stars out of 5 for hospitality, fun and vibe. An edgy NY artist loft in the middle of Healdsburg wine country is a nice change of pace.

Graton is a jewel in the heart of the Russian River wine country. A quaint town with a handful of restaurants, boutique shops and art studios, it is a must place to visit while vacationing in Northern California.

The Underwood Cafe is one of my favorite restaurants near Jenner and Artist's View vacation rental. It has a fantastic bar that many of the local wine industry people patronize. Their wine list is quite extensive and their menu superb. I recently ate lunch with friends visiting from the East Bay and their specialty Moroccan lamb burger sandwich with tzatziki, tomatoes and arugula is one of the best I have tasted. They also have a great beer list, which can't be beat on a hot summer day on their patio deck!

This quote from their website pretty much sums it up:
"Celebrity-winemaker sightings happen almost daily at this Sonoma County spot. To sip Merry Edwards's extraordinary Pinot Noir while sitting next to Merry Edwards is a rare experience. Underwood is also popular for chef and co-owner Matthew Greenbaum's bistro dishes, like Hereford Ranch burgers.”

I recommend making reservations for dinner, for it can get crowded during the evening. However, the Underwood Cafe is a great place to pop in and eat at the bar if their dining area is packed.

The vineyards are lush with their flowing leaves and craggy old vines, the poppies and wildflowers seem to be painted on every hair pin turn on Westside Road, our favorite drive in the valley. This rugged landscape is what draws people to the Russian River and the Sonoma Coast. No matter how many times you visit this glorious land, there is always something new to see.

Our latest discovery was DaVero Organic Farm on the northeast side of Westside Road as you head into Healdsburg. This certified biodynamic organic farm produces both food and wine which has received rave reviews by acclaimed chef Mario Batali and wine critic, Alice Feiring of the NY Times.

What caught our eyes as we drove by their property were the olive trees and unfettered lay of the land. It reminded us of a Mediterranean landscape where you are immersed in the symbiotic relationship of the farm, animals and terroir. As we drove into their Davero's parking lot, we found the grounds spacious and beautiful. With our picnic lunch packed in our car, we were happy to have discovered this place.

The tasting room was laid back, which makes wine tasting fun and relaxing. There was a chalkboard filled with food and wine events on the wall near their winebar, all of which looked like a great way to spend a weekend on the river. We greeted our lovely host who explained to us that the Russian River Valley lies in the same equator grid as Italy. This makes sense as to why the Italians immigrated here and that why many of the vineyards in this area have Italian names. It also explains why growing olives, fruits, herbs and crafting wines that focus on the traditions of Italy is DaVero’s specialty.

We sampled the many wine varietals they had to offer, all of which were wonderful and reasonably priced. It was difficult to choose which one we should serve with our lunch and we settled on a bottle of their 2009 Falco Tannat, which ran neck to neck with their Rose. It was absolutely delicious! The Tannat is a unique and interesting wine, very earthly with bold flavors of coffee, lavender and vanilla. We enjoyed our lunch and their wine as we settled into their secluded patio garden enclosed in natural fauna. It was a nice to have the privacy in such a beautiful setting.

We highly recommend visiting their winery when visiting the Russian River Wineries and Healdsburg. Their friendly and knowledgable service made for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. We will definitely be back!

Jenner, California is a place to commune with nature and your explorative inner world. The two are brought together in perfect harmony through the peaceful surroundings of this hamlet on the Sonoma Coast. There is an enigmatic energy that flows through the air, brought about by the opposing bodies of water that collide together where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. Like the yin and yang of life, the river represents the peace and calm of nature, while the ocean embodies the noisy interaction of our busy, daily lives. This is what makes Jenner a special place and the grounds for those searching for serenity and a chance to recharge in one of the most dramatic and beautiful settings in California.
There are lovely warm days, clear and brisk winter skies mixed with some exciting storms. Winter activities we recommend include beach walking to enjoy the pounding surf, hiking the many trails of Western Sonoma County, wine tasting in the gorgeous Russian River Valley, and cooking wonderful meals to share with friends and family. The winter creek is at it's most dramatic and waterfalls abound. We hope you will consider a visit over the next few months as we move into spring.

We thought you might want to be informed of some winter pricing specials and some updates to the property itself.

Winter Rates;
From now through visits ending by February 28, 2011, you can rent Artist's View/Painter's Dream for $275 per night and Artist's View for $210 per night. Perfect for cozying up to the fire.. We also installed blinds on the large picture windows and French doors, allowing guests who are using the day beds to sleep in. We added three inch memory foam to each day bed to add to your comfort.

We have installed central heating with an energy efficient furnace. There are three individually controlled climate zones in the Great Room, Artist's View bedroom suite, and Painter's Dream bedroom suite. We still have operating wood stoves in each living area, so you can enjoy the ambiance that only a wood fire provides.

On the deck outside the Great Room, we have added a large Weber gas grill, and you can now enjoy barbecue year round.

We have added memory foam to our mattress in Artist's View and a new bed frame, enhancing both comfort and mobility in the upstairs bedroom suite.

The kitchen now has a very good sized microwave.

The parking area has a chain restricting entry for guests only, which ensures privacy during your stay.

Lastly, in October we planted over two hundred tulip and daffodil bulbs. The hills are alive with wildflowers whose petals glisten from the radiant sunlight, multiple hues of deep rich yellows and violets soften the emerald green landscape from our rain soaked winter.

The tulip bulbs we planted in barrels in front of the house never cease to amaze me. Their vibrant colors pop out to greet you, luring you in for a peek at their swan like feather petals. There must be something in the air in Jenner, for they continue to flower from their planting four years ago, a surprise to us and a continued source of joy.

Our magnolia tree is ripe with pink and white flowers set against a cobalt blue sky. The color is alive with the bounty of nature and is a gift to our eyes. Our guests enjoy sitting on the front steps of our covered porch, where they take in the warm afternoon sun and greet the occasional visitor on their trek to the Jenner Falls up the street. You can hear its constant purr in the background, a cascading bounty of water that feeds the Russian River and Jenner Valley, its vein running a couple of hundred feet from our property.

The lavender is in bloom, and we invite our guests to pick a few petals to add to our Japanese soaking tub to help sooth their bodies after their daily activities. As you walk along the property, you can smell the fresh rosemary in the air, a wonderful spice to add to dishes cooked in our classic French style country kitchen. We have had Napa chefs stay at Artist's View and comment on how much they enjoyed cooking here. We recently added a Weber gas grill for cooking outdoors. With the fine weather in store, there is nothing better the grilling and dining on our outdoor deck. The views are spectacular, and a treat for that outdoor candlelight dinner with friends and family.

We recently purchased a leather sofa that envelops you in its thick plush cushions. Let your body relax in comfort in front of our fireplace, as your lover serenades you on our grand piano. This beautiful instrument has shared its joy in many a house concert here.

As the sun sets, the golden light casts its shadows against our grand valley, a private dance for you, where your thoughts and reflections are interrupted only by the sound of an owl and lonely screech of the red tailed hawk. The pristine, quiet valley and juxtaposed energy from the collision of the Russian River and Pacific Ocean has a meditative quality, a calming and soothing effect that washes away any source of tension in our stressful lives.

With the sun setting and the close of the day, toast a glass to the river from our deck. Penny Island awaits you, a secluded strip of land in the middle of the river is a short canoe ride from our property, and for the more adventurous, the mouth of the river can be tackled for those with nerves of steel, the perfect start to your dream filled stay.

The season brings much needed rain to Sonoma and so far the prospect looks good. The record breaking frost that came early this year hit our garden with a vengeance, knocking out our datura, lavender and jasmine plants. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Jenner’s healthy soil and its hardy root stock, will help them come back in the spring.

During this season, the joyous time of the holidays brings out the best in everyone. And with no exception, the small quaint town of Duncan’s Mills is as hospitable as ever, offering home baked cookies to visitors browsing the shops. Duncan’s Mills is an interesting town. It was named after brothers, Samuel and Alexander who established a lumber mill here in the early 1870s. The 1906 earthquake leveled most of the buildings and was rebuilt after the turn of the century for vacationers who rode the train from Sausalito to picnic and enjoy the Russian River. The depot showcases a regional museum with a restored Northwestern Pacific railway coach, two box cars and Caboose #2, which was the last train to Duncans Mills in 1935. Across the street at the Blue Heron restaurant and bar, you will find a placard dedicated to stagecoach robber and poet, ”Black Bart”, who allegedly visited here.

We stroll through Antiquarian/Florabunda, where twigs and cuttings lie about the most beautiful flower arrangements artistically prepared and freshly designed for your holiday table. We continue through the village, the valley hills donning the last of their tan summer grass for the green imagery of an Irish seascape and stop off at Christopher Queen Art Gallery. Their collection of 19 and 20th century plein-air paintings is one of the most extensive and impressive in Northern California. We highly recommend visiting, for it is as if you are stepping back in time to a private collector's personal salon. The stunning and beautiful 19th century burled, book matched antique walnut piano on display is a very rare piece, its closest match we found out is located at Stanford University.

We visit our friend, Andrea, at Studio Nouveau who offered us homemade Turkish candies and tea. Her store is a haven for artists and those with a discerning eye for quality hand crafted jewelry. We ran into one of our favorite waitresses shopping there who works at the Underwood Café in Graton and she gave us a tip to try their mac and cheese with romaine salad on the side recession special. The topic of food, wine and art took over our conversation. The bounty of Sonoma is truly a gift that we sometimes take for granted. The farm to table freshness of the food here, along with the award winning wines, makes it difficult to return back to the city. We purchased a couple of holiday presents for friends and with the thought of food and drink in our minds, we make our way to Guerneville and Dawn’s Bar and Grille.

The bar is decorated in festive holiday ornaments and the sitting room foyer fire glows on the faces of a couple enjoying their fireside chat and cocktails. We always enjoy our visits here, for the staff is friendly, the drinks stiff and the food a great value. We speak to Donald the bartender and find out that they are planning on bringing their piano back to life by adding music on weekends. A great idea, for the river is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the cozy surroundings with friends and family. We glanced at the menu and surprisingly find specials for each night of the week. Here is yet another reason to visit the coast off season and to enjoy the peaceful nature of the country without the hustle and bustle of the city and the stress of tidying up year end business.

We step out into a brisk night sky filled with the glow of brilliant jeweled stars, they flicker with the wishes for a fine holiday season and a new year of health and happiness. Happy Holidays!

With winter coming and the freakish threat of snow today, the idea of having to start a fire to keep warm is no where near as comforting as the idea of turning a thermostat instead.

So, begins our journey in Jenner this weekend, with the ethereal sounds of French composer, Olivier Messiaen's "Vocalize" scoring the flight of the hawks and turkey vultures that soar our valley. Messiaen was an ornothologist and the flow of his compositions take you on a musical journey to the skies, climbing and descending, riding the charts of the stars.

Today is a bit overcast and a fall storm looms over Cazadero, our hillside neighbor to the east of Jenner. We make a quick dart for Shell Beach for a morning hike, one of our favorite Sonoma Coast paths that leads to a cove by the ocean. It is brisk this early December morning and a slight drizzle begins to fall as we make our way to the beach cove. We search for whales along the bluff, but the rough rise of the seas sends whitecaps spouting in all directions, making it difficult for viewing the great grey beasts.

We circle the cove, the waves breaking close to shore hammering the rocks that sends a spray of white foam exploding thirty feet into the air. Quite impressive for this time of year. We beat the heavier rain, as we reach our car and set off to Bodega Bay to visit Sammy, our favorite fisherman who has caught and cleaned two Dunganess
crabs for our dinner this evening. They are smaller then usual this year, for this season is low in abundance and we are in year two, of a seven year recovery cycle.

A crab dinner would not be complete without a fine bottle of wine, so we decide to explore a couple of newer wineries near Sebastopol and Guerneville. We drove along River Road, the grapevines bare from this years harvest and the change of the seaons. Their knotted roots lie exposed in a tangle of branches and rustic colored leaves, soon to be shed like tears to the earth, as we settle into winter.

Our first stop is Woodenhead, a small boutique winery that defines the term, "cult" wine. Their tasting menu consisted mainly of reds, a wonderful list of Zinfandel's, Pinot Noir's and a fine and delicious Carignagne. The fruit was well balanced, without the harsh tannins that often accompany wines of this varietal. The style is in the manner of the French, very earthy and full bodied with a lingering and mellow aftertaste that captures the essence of the fruit and soil combination.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLmaV2Pl1H-tKbIIKZ1HNWWcl0S0qF9W_jNyAspDIBZ5SY1zrjyTW7zSdhP8Au2vkEzfdJ5vRd3AY8Dmk1jg1fp8sd-qII4edyJWNPcOXE9ii_M-5GRO05RxlFLt7-_KWoU06r5Qby59O/s320/Woodenhead+Winery.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412939481687264786" />

Their tasting room overlooks a beautiful valley and their vineyards, where consequently, they sell their fruit to other wineries in the area. The reason we find out, is that the winemaker prefers to use grapes from cooler climates to produce the reds he has crafted and imports them from a number of areas, including Mendocino County, a great Pinot region along the north coast. We were taken by the Carignagne, and with our limited budget for wine these days, couldn't pass up the $22price. A great blend, earthy and organic with lot's of complex fruit and sensuous aftertaste. This wine is a winner.

We drove northeast towards Windsorand came across Eastside Road where we discovered the winery, "Copain". Originally formed in Santa Rosa, the owners developed and completed this wonderful piece of property and tasting room in 2008. Tucked into the Windsor hills, their tasting room was spacious, with a rustic/modern sensibility that lent itself to the special wines they were crafting. We were greeted by our server, Chris who took us down the menu to one of my favorite wines of the day, a Syrah that had the impact of a full bodied Malbec. It had a great finish that would be the perfect compliment to steak and or, lamb. The price was a little steep at $45 a bottle, but for those who are flush, I highly recommend it for a special occasion celebration. This wine rocks, as well as their Pinot's, crafted in the French style like Woodenhead, that seems to be purveying the Russian River valley these days.

With our crab beckoning our arrival home, we thought a nice Rose would be a good candidate to serve for dinner. Luckily, we found out that Copain offered a limited production Rose that turned out to be superb for the price of $15 a bottle. Needless to say, we were pleased with the fruit pallete and the dryness of the blend and it took our imaginations back to the small cafe's along the Seine, where we enjoyed a glass of Rose with our lunch each day while visiting Paris. Who says Rose is only good for hot summer days, we found this wine to be the perfect compliment for a fall afternoon tasting!

That in itself, was worth the price of admission and the start of a wonderful winter season.

I ask my wife, Anne as we walk along the pristine and beautiful Goat Rock beach bluff. There off in the distance is a migrating whale on it's way to Mexico and warm waters to birth it's calf. December and January are a wonderful time to whale watch from the many spectacular coastal trails that offer hillside views of our enigmatic ocean.

The days are warm and we enjoy layering up in comfortable sweaters and pullovers to manage the ever changing coastal winds. The light is diffused this time of year, offering dynamic and imaginative views of the Sonoma coast. One of our favorite hikes is located at Gerstle Campground. Park at the lot and stroll along the coastal trail littered with ancient remains of the California seabed. Rocks jut into to the sky with permanent scars of a million years of struggle with nature. Their statuesque sillouhettes take on shapes limited to the depth of imagination. Both animal and human characters come to life dotting the hills, frozen in time, casting shadows on the valley floor. If only they could talk, we might hear tales of mastadons scratching their hides against the rock, polishing it to a smooth gloss that remains today.

It is a moderate hike, with the main trail ending at a cove where we stop for lunch and watch the waves, kelp and seals engage in a dance with the ocean swell. For adventurous hikers, you can continue up the coast trail that shadows you in redwoods, their pine needles cushioning your steps. The captivating smell of the redwood and cyprus trees mixed in with the sea air is exhilarating. It is here that we find a solitude and oneness with our earth that connects us to nature and the explorer's spirit.

I like to describe our coast as "Nature's Zen garden", and if you continue to hike the trail I mentioned above, you will find an example of this by means of a waterfall with descending pools of moss covered rocks that gently flow and spill over into a private sea garden of lichen, moss and shell fish. This meditative spot offers both the violent sound of the ocean juxtaposed against the soothing sounds of the waterfall. A contemplative reminder that the world is a balancing act of both chaos and centeredness.

Our craggy coast with it's crooked teeth smiles lumbering down to the battered surf tide pools is like no other place in the world. The many trails that are scattered along the Sonoma coast with their breathtaking views are a journey back in time. Strolling along these paths, you get the sense of the vastness of our earth and the impermanence of our lives. This remarkable landscape excites the imagination and invigorates the soul and in a sense elevates our consciousness on a journey not unlike the migrating whales, seeking calmness and re-birth in a fast paced world.

My wife and I enjoy our hikes and the time we have spent getting to know the Sonoma coast. It offers us a chance to re-connect away from the bustle of the city and share with our guests the many splendid joys the Sonoma coast has to offer. Jenner is a haven for spiritual rejuvination and Artist's View and Painter's Dream is one of many special delights found on our coast. We look forward to your visit and hearing about your experiences and favorite adventures.

Scot Sier

Sitting in the backyard in the sun of Casa Alta is a wonderful experience. Miles, our pet Corgi, is happy here at my feet as I write this in the cool summer morning breeze under the veranda. The weather is fantastic this time of year in Napa and we are enjoying the brief cool front that has rolled in this week.

The house is warm and friendly and the spacious kitchen and back deck are great for cooking, relaxing, playing guitar and talking with friends over a bottle of wine. The quiet street is a nice contrast to our apartment in San Francisco and the people are very friendly, waving as we walk Miles in the morning.

We enjoyed visiting and getting to know Napa and the wonderful attractions here. The lovely décor and peaceful nature of Casa Alta and it’s proximity to downtown made for a pleasant stay. We look forward to a return visit.

Scot Sier & Anne O’Brien

Serendipitously, the music and lyrics came to me a few months before reading about Prince Chalres and Camilla Bowles engagement.
Enjoy the song lyrics and performances by Sam Bass on cello, Bruce Kurnow on harp and Scot Sier on guitar.
LADY SOMMERSET TAKE MY HAND
WALK THE GARDEN WITH ME GRACE OUR LAND
THERE ARE RUMORS OF YOUR LOVE FOR ME
KINDLY SHARE THEM FOR MY HEARTS INTRIGUED
WILL I LEARN ABOUT YOUR FAMILY TREE
WILL I HEAR ABOUT PAST LOVES BELIEVED
FOR YOUR FAIR SKIN AND YOUR GOLDEN BROUCHE
LIPS OF VELVET THAT I LONG TO TOUCH
COME SIT HERE UNDER THE LILAC TREE
HUMMING BIRDS ARE SINGING CAN YOU SEE
WINGS OF FLUTTER SHARE MY HEARTS INTENT
SOON WE WILL DICOVER WHAT YOU MEANT
BY YOUR LETTER SCENTED WITH YOUR BATH
LOCK OF HAIR A FEATHER FROM YOUR CAP
RED WAX PARCHMENT SEALED WITH YOUR CREST
COME SIT CLOSER FOR MY HEAD TO REST
LADY SOMMERSET
I LOVE YOU LIKE THE SKY
ROSES, LILAC, CHAMOMILE THE COLORS IN YOUR EYES
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH BEAUTY
AND THROUGH OUR HEARTS WE’LL SEE
A KINGDOM LEFT TO BETTER MEN, YOUR HONOR THEY’LL DECREE
THERE ARE THOSE WHOSE JEALOUS HEARTS AGREE
THAT A LOVE CANT GROW LIKE ROOTS ON TREES
THOUGH THEY COVET THY HAND BEQUEATHED TO ME
I’LL DRAW SWORDS PROCLAIM MY LOVE FOR THEE
WILL OUR LOVE STAND UP THE TEST OF TIME
THERE ARE THOSE WHOSE MOTIVES DRAW THE LINE
SEARCH FOR GOLD THROUGH CHARMING EYES YOU’LL SEE
DO THEIR BEST TO STEAL YOUR HEART FROM ME
LADY SOMMERSET
I LOVE YOU LIKE THE SKY
ROSES, LILAC, CHAMOMILE THE COLORS IN YOUR EYES
SURROUND YOURSELF WITH BEAUTY
AND THROUGH OUR HEARTS WE’LL SEE
A KINGDOM LEFT TO BETTER MEN, YOUR HONOR THEY’LL DECREE
RING ALL THE QUEENS FOLK
CHURCH BELLS IN THE SKY
YOUR WORDS MY PARDON
I CANNOT TELL A LIE
I DEVOTE MY LOVE BEFORE YOU
FOR THIS I SHALL NOT MISS
THE QUIVERED BOW DRAWN TIGHTLY SEALED BY A KISS

Artists View, our vacation rental retreat, was built in 1905 and was part of the settlement to rebuild San Francisco after the "Great Earthquake" in 1906. The history of the northern coast of California is very interesting and worth exploring to get a better sense of the area. This history also inspired our design and decor of our home. Here are two informative websites about the north coast for you to visit:

Sonoma Parks

North Coast History

My wife and I discovered Jenner twelve years ago while visiting the nearby town of Occidental. We saw a window sign advertising a home for sale in Jenner that offered “your own bit of Provence, France in California with a music studio.” As musicians, it caught our eyes, so we took down the number and called for an appointment.

We traveled the next day to visit the area and were astonished that such a wonderful place was so close to the city of San Francisco. It took us only an hour and a half to be transported to a place of incredible rugged beauty. As we drove up Balboa Street, the site of our future home, we couldn't help but notice the wild vegetation, flora of hillside mosses, sweet peas, wild roses and succulents nestled along a handful of small homes and cottages tucked against a rocky and mountainous terrain.

We knew that this home was very special as we sat on top of the canyon ridge located above our property that shared a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, Penny Island and the Russian River. We decided at that moment to put all of our savings into creating a relaxing environment dedicated to music and art, inspired by the poetic landscape of the area.

From Artist View Vacation Rental

Our love of open space engaged us to create a "Great Room" with a grand piano for entertaining and dining, as well as embellish the eyes with spectacular views of our valley and the Russian River. Gardening is a past time we both love and we designed and built a custom formal French garden for our guests to enjoy. The light, colors and beauty of our garden enchanted us as we took our vows and celebrated our wedding there shortly after it's completion.

From Artist View Vacation Rental

We wanted to create an environment that mirrored the vibrant and dynamic landscape of our secluded canyon, so we built three outdoor private decks that showcase the many unique views our valley offers. We especially love our bedside deck, where you are literally in the tree canopy viewing hummingbirds as they dance by. The quietude of our secluded property makes for great star gazing as you listen to the calls of the owls at night. Since we are located in a canyon, we are sheltered from the heavy strong winds of the ocean. My wife, Anne is a big bath person, and she helped create our showcase Japanese soaking tub bathroom with valley and river views. Having a green footprint has become an important part of our continuing upgrades, so we installed an on-demand hot water heater and invested into cleaner burning fire logs to reduce our carbon footprint.

From Artist View Vacation Rental

As lovers of books and space to read and relax, we built sitting rooms in each of our bedrooms as well as daybeds in our "Great Room". We chose relaxing colors that envelop you in the room and capture the palette of our garden and valley with lots of light and windows for fresh sea and river air. We have a waterfall and stream that runs along the south end of our property. During most seasons, the calming and soothing effect adds to a wonderful and restful nights sleep.

From Artist View Vacation Rental

One of our favorite activities is to have coffee in the morning and wine in the evening in our garden. Depending on the light and the time of day, there are three sitting areas to relax and soak in the views and the sun. The vibrant colors, fragrant aromas, the sounds of humming birds and bees while the clouds whisk by is magical. This quiet meditative space is a great way to start and end your day, contemplating the many activities the Sonoma coast has to offer.

With all of the exciting adventures to be had along our grand coast, we recommend visiting these websites to help plan your stay.

Visit California Website
Sonoma Coast Wineries Website
Sonoma County Parks Website
Russian River Canoeing

From Artist View Vacation Rental

We hope that you visit Jenner and consider being our guests at Artist's View.
