From Artist View Vacation Rental

Welcome to Jenner, California, a small hamlet where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. Artists View, our vacation rental retreat, was built in 1905 and was part of the settlement to rebuild San Francisco after the "Great Earthquake" in 1906. The history of the northern coast of California is very interesting and worth exploring to get a better sense of the area. This history also inspired our design and decor of our home. Here are two informative websites about the north coast for you to visit:

North Coast History

My wife and I discovered Jenner twelve years ago while visiting the nearby town of Occidental. We saw a window sign advertising a home for sale in Jenner that offered “your own bit of Provence, France in California with a music studio.” As musicians, it caught our eyes, so we took down the number and called for an appointment.

We traveled the next day to visit the area and were astonished that such a wonderful place was so close to the city of San Francisco. It took us only an hour and a half to be transported to a place of incredible rugged beauty. As we drove up Balboa Street, the site of our future home, we couldn't help but notice the wild vegetation, flora of hillside mosses, sweet peas, wild roses and succulents nestled along a handful of small homes and cottages tucked against a rocky and mountainous terrain.

We knew that this home was very special as we sat on top of the canyon ridge located above our property that shared a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, Penny Island and the Russian River. We decided at that moment to put all of our savings into creating a relaxing environment dedicated to music and art, inspired by the poetic landscape of the area.

Our love of open space engaged us to create a "Great Room" with a grand piano for entertaining and dining, as well as embellish the eyes with spectacular views of our valley and the Russian River. Gardening is a past time we both love and we designed and built a custom formal French garden for our guests to enjoy. The light, colors and beauty of our garden enchanted us as we took our vows and celebrated our wedding there shortly after it's completion.

We wanted to create an environment that mirrored the vibrant and dynamic landscape of our secluded canyon, so we built three outdoor private decks that showcase the many unique views our valley offers. We especially love our bedside deck, where you are literally in the tree canopy viewing hummingbirds as they dance by. The quietude of our secluded property makes for great star gazing as you listen to the calls of the owls at night. Since we are located in a canyon, we are sheltered from the heavy strong winds of the ocean. We are also in a banana belt, where the fog on many days eludes us, as it hangs off the Russian River miles away.

We both love to cook, eat and relax afterwards in a soaking tub to decompress from our fast paced city lives. We hired a local craftsman to custom build a table for formal dining and we remodeled our kitchen with all the modern amenities to please the most demanding chef. My wife, Anne is a big bath person, and she helped create our showcase Japanese soaking tub bathroom with valley and river views. Our "Great Room" and both bedrooms have wood burning fireplaces, so curling up to the fire with a book and glass of your favorite beverage after a good soak is a wonderful way to relax.

We, in partnership with our gifted contractor and designer, recently completed both bedroom en suite bath remodels, hand picking local “McIntyre” tile laid by one of Sonoma County's finest craftsman. Having a green footprint has become an important part of our continuing upgrades, so we installed an on-demand hot water heater and invested into cleaner burning fire logs to reduce our carbon footprint.

As lovers of books and space to read and relax, we built sitting rooms in each of our bedrooms as well as daybeds in our "Great Room". We chose relaxing colors that envelop you in the room and capture the palette of our garden and valley with lots of light and windows for fresh sea and river air. We have a waterfall and stream that runs along the south end of our property. During most seasons, the calming and soothing effect adds to a wonderful and restful nights sleep.

One of our favorite activities is to have coffee in the morning and wine in the evening in our garden. Depending on the light and the time of day, there are three sitting areas to relax and soak in the views and the sun. The vibrant colors, fragrant aromas, the sounds of humming birds and bees while the clouds whisk by is magical. This quiet meditative space is a great way to start and end your day, contemplating the many activities the Sonoma coast has to offer.

  1. We ate dinner at Cape Fear in Duncans Mills last night and the service and meal were awesome! Our waitress got our order into the kitchen before the two tables of 20 people, so she got extra points for the favor.

The food is down home finger lickin' good. The pork loin marinated in Jim's sauce was cooked perfectly, a little sweet, but delicious nonetheless. The Salmon tortellini in a cream sauce was one of the best we have had. Not to heavy, so that the flavor of the fish was at the top of the pallatte. The wine list is ok, but the by the glass choices were good. The Claret by Copolla was excellent, highly recommend it. This place is the perfect restaurant after a day on the river, home style cooking and service to match. We'll be back.
